Care guide

Good cotton lasts for years

Here's how to keep it at its best.

Washing

  • Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, or hand wash for best results.
  • Wash dark and light prints separately for the first 2–3 washes.
  • Use a mild detergent. Avoid bleach or harsh chemical cleaners, which can strip the natural dye.
  • Avoid washing with rough fabrics like denim or towels that can cause pilling.

Drying

  • Line dry in shade wherever possible. Direct, prolonged sunlight can fade hand block prints over time.
  • Avoid tumble drying on high heat. If using a dryer, choose a low-heat setting.

Ironing

  • Iron on a medium setting, ideally while the fabric is slightly damp, for the crispest finish.
  • Iron on the reverse side of printed fabric to protect the print's surface.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Fold rather than hang bedsheets and quilts to avoid stretching.
  • For quilts and dohars, store in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, to let the fabric air.

A note on hand block printed cotton

Because each piece is dyed and printed by hand, slight variations in colour and print placement are part of the process, not a flaw. No two pieces are ever exactly alike. With proper care, hand block printed cotton actually softens and improves with every wash, unlike machine-printed fabric which tends to stiffen or pill over time.
